The Outage Detection by IP condition provides monitoring of your Device for loss of connectivity based on the specified IP address. You specify the traffic flow (send, receive, or both send and receive), the time period that you want to monitor, and the IP address or addresses to monitor.
Note: This condition is based on the devices behavior; it does not indicate carrier outages.
Following is an example of when the Outage Detection by IP condition is useful.
Outage Detection by IP Example
An application should be communicating regularly on a specific IP address or addresses on a device and suddenly goes silent. This condition triggers an alert indicating that the application is not running and there could be a problem with the device.
If the Outage Detection by IP condition is set and the device is not communicating as specified in the condition, an alert is triggered.
Setting an Outage Detection by IP
- Select Rules from the Dashboard navigator to open the Rules page.
- Select Create Rule.
- Enter a name for the new Rule.
- Select the Severity level (Low, Medium, High, or Critical). The default is Medium.
- Select Add Conditions.
- Select Outage Detection by IP and select Continue.
- Select the flow that you want to monitor (Send, Receive, or Send/Receive).
- Select the time frame you want to monitor. The default is 1 hour.
- Enter the IP addresses. If you need more entry fields for entering IP addresses, select Add Another IP. A row is added where you can enter the next IP address. You continue this step until all IP addresses are entered.
Note: All octets (the four decimal numbers of the IP address) must be either a single number between 0-255, a range of any two numbers between 0-255, or an asterisk (*) to indicate a wildcard. And At least one octet must be non-wildcard.
If you need to copy and paste the IP address from a spreadsheet, select simple input view and copy and paste into the input field. - Select Continue.
- Select Continue again.
Verify that this is the selection you intended. If changes are necessary, select Back to return and change your selection. - Select Save (located at the bottom of the Create Rule page).
Once Conditions are saved, they are displayed in a list in the Conditions section of the Create a Rule page.
Important! Outage Detection by IP cannot be combined with other conditions within the same Rule. Refer to Following Rule Condition Restrictions for a list of all restrictions.
You can be notified when an alert is triggered by selecting Add Action and entering one or more e-mail addresses. If you need help, refer to Receiving e-mail notifications about Alerts.
When the Condition and e-mail addresses have been added, select Create Rule.
Notes:
- SecurityPro checks whether a name for the Rule has been entered. If a name has not been entered, the Rule is not created and the Rule name field is highlighted in red. Enter a Rule name and select Create Rule to create the Rule.
- If a Severity Level for this Rule has not been selected, it defaults to Medium.
- Once created, the new Rule is added to the list on the Rules screen.
You can now assign this Rule to a Group. For help, refer to Assigning a Rule to a Group.
Important! SecurityPro only monitors your devices to notify you when your Device is not behaving as expected. It does not resolve this behavior. You must take action to resolve your Device’s behavior and then acknowledge within SecurityPro that you have done so.
